I am struggling with peer pressure, what should I do?

According to a recent survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, peer pressure is a leading cause of substance abuse among teenagers, with 55% of high school students reporting that they have tried drugs or alcohol due to peer pressure. Christian teens face unique challenges in navigating peer pressure while staying true to our faith and values.

We are called to stand firm in our beliefs and make decisions that honour God, but it can be challenging when our peers are pushing us in a different direction. Let us explore some practical ways to deal with peer pressure from a biblical perspective

Have a clear understanding of your values and beliefs.

This means taking time to reflect on our faith and what it means to us. We must have a firm foundation in our beliefs and be able to articulate them to others. When we know what we believe, we are less likely to be swayed by the opinions or actions of others.

Surround yourselves with positive influences.

This means seeking out friends who share our values and beliefs and who will encourage us to make good decisions. The Bible tells us that "bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33). Therefore, it is important to surround ourselves with people who will uplift and encourage us in our faith.

Be willing to say "no" when necessary.

Sometimes, saying no to peer pressure may mean going against the crowd or making a decision that is unpopular. However, as Christians, we are called to live according to God's standards, even when it may be difficult. The Bible tells us that "do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). This means that we must be willing to stand firm in our faith and make decisions that honour God, even when it may not be popular or easy.

Pray for strength and guidance.

We cannot overcome peer pressure on our own. We must rely on God's strength and guidance to help us make good decisions and resist negative influences. The Bible tells us to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This means that we should be in constant communication with God, seeking His guidance and strength to resist peer pressure and make good decisions.

Be willing to forgive yourself when you make mistakes.

Nobody is perfect, and we may make mistakes or give in to peer pressure at times. However, we must remember that God is a forgiving God, and we can always turn to Him for forgiveness and guidance. The Bible tells us that "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Dealing with peer pressure can be a challenge, but as Christians, we have the resources and guidance we need to make good decisions. By having a clear understanding of our values and beliefs, surrounding ourselves with positive influences, being willing to say "no" when necessary, praying for strength and guidance, and being willing to forgive ourselves when we make mistakes, we can stand firm in our faith and honour God in all that we do. May we all be encouraged and empowered to resist negative influences and make decisions that honour God.
